New Hour of Code

  • Hi all, we just released our Hour of Code - a free online coding course for kids (9+). The course is an introduction to basic programming concepts – sequence, loops, events. In our school courses we realized that the Hour of Code is a useful primer for block coding before we introduce the kids to Scratch. We hope you enjoy the course and would appreciate your feedback. Have fun.

    Love this @Andreas-Koch ! Great work :raised_hands:
What did you use to make it?

  • Hi Ciara, thank, glad you like it. We created an interface between the Game engine Unity and Blockly to be able to use all kinds of videogames for courses (more will follow soon). The general idea is to create a webside, were kids can learn code with different tools/applications but with one programming language - Blockly. We think it is important to provide different ways/areas to learn to code, because of the various interests the kids have (games, art, robots, microcontroler et al). Next step will be the integration of processing, a programming language to make art.

Wow, so Unity is partly powering this? That’s awesome.

Looking forward to seeing what you make for Processing :paintbrush:

  • Unity is free for non- or semi-commercial use. And yes, its amazing what is possible with it. We are only scratching the surface now. Happy to keep you updated on Processing.

  • @Andreas-Koch Thanks so much again for sharing this! :)

Your very welcome. Btw.: Just today we completed our first test build of a Blockly-Processing interface. The idea is to teach kids coding through Processing, an open-source computer programming language built for the electronic arts, new media art, and visual design. You can try it here: Just hit the “Refresh”-Button.
